Do-it-Yourself wird bei interfiction seit je großgeschrieben – wie der kreative Umgang mit Medien, Technik und Medientechnologien überhaupt. Dazu gehört natürlich auch die Praxis – das Selbermachen, Basteln, Tüfteln, Erfinden und Transformieren.
In der interfiction DIY-Workshop-Werkstatt wollen wir Neues ausprobieren, voneinander lernen und unser Wissen weitergeben

Auch bei interfiction 2010 wird es wieder eine DIY-Workshop-Werkstatt geben, in der die TeilnehmerInnen selbst Hand anlegen, eigene Projekte realisieren und mit anderen praktische Tipps und Tricks austauschen können.

Mit von der Partie ist ein weiteres Mal das DIY Makeaway der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für Mechatronische Kunst (SGMK) – die SGKM-BastlerInnen haben zusätzlich zu ihrem Know How in ihrem gut sortierten mobilen Labor mit Materialien und Werkzeugen natürlich auch ihre phantastischen DIY-Makeway-Kits dabei!

Der Fokus der interfiction DIY-Workshop-Werkstatt 2010 wird – dem aktuellen Schwerpunkt entsprechend – auf GADGETS bzw. mobilen Geräten und Applikationen liegen.

Zugleich ist die Workshop-Werkstatt jedoch offen für alle Eigenbau- und Bastel-Projekte mit kreativen Ansätzen an der Schnittstelle von Kunst-, Medien- und Netzkultur, die Low-Tech mit offenen Formaten, also Open Source arbeiten.

Do-it-Yourself is by tradition a core issue at interfiction – as are creative ways do deal with media and technologies in general. Practical access and practical knowledge do matter – and therefore we embrace and foster DIY, bricolage, tinkering, home made inventions and transformations of existing technologies.

In our interfiction DIY-workshop-lab we want to try out new methods, techniques and strategies, we want to work together, learn from each other and pass our knowledge.

Thus also interfiction 2010 will host a DIY-lab to provide a platform for hands-on research, the realization of individual as well as collective/collaborative projects and of course for skill-sharing and exchange of know-how.

Moreover, we are happy and proud to announce that the DIY Makeaway of Swiss Society for Mechatronic Arts (SGMK) will be with us again – and with their fantastic mobile Makeaway-Lab the SGKM-team will bring loads of know-how and loads of materials and other hot stuff, including the awsome DIY-Makeway-Kits!

As the focus of interfiction 2010 is on GADGETS, mobile devices and apps (as well as mobile stuff, toys & tools in general), so is the focus of our DIY-workshop-lab.

However, our workshop-lab is open for all DIY projects sporting creative access at the intersections of at, media and network cultures that are low tech, low cost and based on open formats/open source.

GADGETS-A-GOGO: Sie sind handlich und klein. Sie sind hilfreich und nützlich. Sie bestechen durch Technik und durch Design. Und/oder machen einfach Spaß. Vor allem aber machen sie (uns) mobil. Und was geht noch?

interfiction nimmt in diesem Jahr mit Vorträgen, Präsentationen und Workshops mobile Gadgets als Spiel- und Werkzeuge in den Blick – und in die Hand.

Dabei sollen natürlich nicht nur die Gadgets selbst – vom Smartphone über GPS-Empfänger, Kameras, Musikaufnahme- und geräte bis hin zu mobilen elektronischen Spielzeugen – und ihre Technologie zum Thema werden, sondern vor allem nach ihren Funktionen und Effekten, nach Nutzen und Nutzungen in verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Kontexten gefragt werden.

Wen und was machen Gadgets mobil? Unter welchen Voraussetzungen, zu welchen Zwecken und – was nicht nur eine ökomomische Frage ist – um welchen Preis finden in ihnen unterschiedliche Konfigurationen von Hard- und Software zusammen? Wie wurden und wie werden Interfaces von und für Gadgets gestaltet – und wann bzw. inwiefern lässt sich sagen, das Gadgets selbst als Interfaces funktionieren?

In welcher Relation stehen dabei Funktionen und Design? Wie verhalten sich „Nutz und Lust“ bzw. Werkzeug- und Spielzeugcharakter zueinander? Welche Entwicklungen gibt es jenseits der von großen Herstellern dominierten Märkte? Welche Bedeutung besitzen Open Source-Technologien, Do-It-Yourself und „Hacks“ im weitesten Sinne in diesem Zusammenhang?

Welche Rolle spielen Gadgets in unterschiedliche soziokulturellen Kontexten und Gemeinschaften? Wie haben sich die Relationen zwischen Nerd- und Popkultur, Konsum und prosumer culture entwickelt? Welche Potentiale besitzen Gadgets für kreative Anwendungen – und welche speziell für die Kunst?

Als interdisziplinäre Workshop-Tagung für Kunst, Medien und Netzkultur will interfiction insbesondere die Schnittstellen und Verschränkungen zwischen diesen Komplexen untersuchen. Neben den aktuellen Entwicklungen können dabei auch technik- und kulturgeschichtliche bzw. medienarchäologische Perspektiven interessieren. Ein besonderes Augenmerk soll dabei wie immer der Frage nach quelloffenen Entwicklung und Open Source Technologien sowie dem Do-It-Yourself-Ansatz gelten.

An interdisziplinärem Austausch interessierte Künstler/innen, Video- und Filmemacher/innen, Vermittler/innen, (Netz-)Kultur-Theoretiker/innen und -Praktiker/innen sind dazu eingeladen, im Rahmen der Tagung Thesen und Projekte vorzustellen und zu diskutieren.

Das interfiction-Team bittet um Vorschläge für Beiträge in Form einer Skizze von ca. 1.500 bis 3.000 Zeichen mit kurzen Angaben zur Person im Umfang von ca. 800 Zeichen Fliesstext (!) und Kontaktdaten* einzureichen in elektronischer Form (text, doc, rtf, odt) bis zum 19. 07. 2010 an info@interfiction.org

Wir bitten zu beachten, dass zusätzlich bzw. parallel zur Einreichung eine Anmeldung des Beitrags über die Registratur des Kasseler Dokfests stattfinden sollte: www.filmladen.de/dokfest

Wenn zudem Beiträge für andere Festival-Sektionen eingereicht werden, muss für diese im Anmeldeformular eine separate Anmeldung für die entsprechenden Sektionen (Film, Installation) vermerkt werden.

Unabhängig davon freut sich das interfiction-Team jedoch, wenn zusammen mit der Einreichung der Skizze ein Hinweis darauf erfolgt, ob Bewerbungen für andere Festival-Sektionen eingereicht worden sind.

GADGETS-A-GOGO: They are handy and small. They are useful helpers. They combine smart technology with smart design. They’re simply fun. And, most important: They are and make us mobile. But is that all?

This year’s interfiction symposium invites with lectures, presentations and workshop-sessions to take a closer look at – and hands on – mobile gadgets as toys and tools.

On the issue are not only the gadgets as such and their technologies – from smart phones and GPS receivers, cameras, sound recording devices and audio players as well as all kind of tiny electronic toys. Of course the focus will be on their functions and effects, on utility, usability and uses in different social and cultural contexts as well.

Who and what is made mobile? What are the conditions and premises – and what is, not only in terms of money matters, the price we pay? How were and are interfaces for gadgets designed? Could we possibly say that some gadgets are interfaces by themselves?

What are characteristic relations between form and function? What about those between fuction(s) and fun, between toy and tool? Which kind of developments can we find beyond the markets dominated by bigger companies and global industries? How important are Open Source technologies, D.I.Y. and “hacks”?

What is the role gadgets play in different socio-cultural contexts and communities? How have relations between nerd culture and pop culture, consumer and prosumer culture changed over the years? What is the potential of gadgets for creative uses – and what about their uses for artistic purposes? Is there something like gadget art?

As an interdisciplinary workshop-conference for art, media and network cultures, interfiction will explore promises and problems generated at the mentioned intersections and convergences of technological and cultural developments. Together with the more recent achievements, we’re also interested in the histories of gadget technologies and cultures, as well as perspectives of media archaeology. As always, special attention will be devoted to Open Source development, OS technology, and Do-It-Yourself access.

Artists, video- and filmmakers, researchers, curators, writers, activists with a crush for gadgets and interested in interdisciplinary exchange are invited to join the conference and to discuss their ideas and projects.

Please send your proposals for lectures and presentations of up to 350-500 words together with a brief CV (ca. 150 words, continuous text) and contact data* in digital text format until (text, doc, rtf, odt) until July 19, 2010 to info@interfiction.org

Please not that you have to register as well (= additionally!) by filling the entry form at: www.filmladen.de/dokfest

In case you want to apply with other formats for other sections of the festival as well, you’ll have to fill a separate section of the form to do so.

However, the interfiction team would be happy if you’d notify us about parallel entries for other sections of the festival together with your proposal.
